WORKPLACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION IN THE HEALTHCARE SETTING
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to help healthcare workers better understand the implications of violence in the healthcare setting. The course identifies the principal types of violence healthcare professionals experience; risk factors that place them at greater exposure; prevention and intervention strategies to reduce the magnitude and severity of violent incidents; and post-incident response criteria for workers. Also discussed are the consequences of workplace violence, warning signs in perpetrators of violence, and the new and emerging risks of bullying in the workplace and digital violence.
OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify institutional, environmental and policy risk factors for workplace violence
- Recognize behavioral warning signs of violence in individuals
- Recognize warning signs of bullying in the workplace
- Take steps to implement a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program
- Recognize digital violence and its implications
- Define what constitutes workplace violence
- Identify the four principal types of workplace violence
- Develop a definition of workplace violence
- Describe the potential consequences of workplace violence on the individual nurse, the healthcare organization, the quality of healthcare delivery, and the nursing profession
- Use assessment tools for ascertaining a patient's level of risk for assault, homicide or self-injury.
